Everything about our visit was special. We expected to be treated like family by the wonderful Fijians because of our previous trips there. But they seemed even a bit more friendly and personable if that's possible. What we appreciated most was the smallness of the resort, which meant a lot of lone time, uncrowded excursions (especially the free twice-daily snorkelling trips) , and getting to know the other travellers.     Matangi is a small, family-owned, and managed resort that employs 100+ people from villages and communities in the nearby Qamea and Taveuni Islands. A few staff members, some with their families, reside on Matangi island, but most live off the island, commuting daily by boat from their respective villages.

    Getting to Matangi Island

    The Fiji Islands is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, situated on the 180˚ Meridian, in the Tropic of Capricorn, 18˚ South of the Equator; Fiji is part of the Oceanic group of islands, which are mostly volcanic in origin with large fringing tropical coral reef systems.

    Fiji’s international carrier, Fiji Airways, offers regular flights between Fiji and Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu and Vancouver, as well as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo. Virgin Australia also offers regular flights between Fiji and all major cities in Australia and New Zealand.

    To get from Nadi International Airport, located on the Western Coast of Viti Levu, to Matangi Island, you must take a scenic 90-minute flight with Fiji Link, the domestic airline of Fiji Airways, to the picturesque island of Taveuni. These flights operate twice daily in the morning and afternoon. From there, enjoy a short 45-minute car and boat transfer, taking in the stunning views as you travel to Matangi Island. Matangi Island provides these car and boat transfers at a charge of US$150 + tax per person round-trip.

    The breathtaking natural splendor of Matangi Island includes lush lowland rainforests and pristine beaches, creating an awe-inspiring environment.

    The island's verdant vegetation is home to many native bird species, including the Orange fruit dove and the Fiji Parrotfinch. A large Fiji Flying Fox fruit bat colony can also be found in Horseshoe Bay. These impressive large flying creatures are often sighted at dusk when they come out in search of fruit amongst the island's lush vegetation. Narrow caves at the northern entrance to Horseshoe Bay are home to smaller insect-eating bats.

    Embark on a journey of tranquillity along the island's natural coastal path and volcanic ridge-top trail. With its panoramic views, the ridge-top hiking trail offers a serene escape from the bustling world. Amidst the intriguing native flora, you'll discover Cycad palms, living fossils of an endangered plant species, on Matangi's rocky ridge-top.     Fiji boasts a tropical climate that is both inviting and comfortable. It features a hot, humid, and wet season from December to April, followed by a cool, dry season from May to October. The temperature remains pleasantly consistent throughout the year, averaging around 26C—30C (79F-86F) in the warmer months from November to April and 23C-25C (73F-77F) in the cooler months from May to October.

    Light, comfortable clothing is suitable all year round, with a light sweater recommended for the cooler months. For snorkelers, a long-sleeved rash guard is recommended. For scuba divers, a 3-millimetre neoprene wetsuit will provide ample warmth during your dives.

    History and Culture

    Our unique island paradise has been in our family since 1878 when an adventurous ancestor who sailed on a schooner from Sydney seeking opportunities in farming on neighbouring Laucala Island purchased Matangi Island.

    Matangi Island Resort is on a 240-acre island paradise in the Northeastern part of the Fiji group of islands. After farming the island as a small coconut plantation until 1986, Flora Douglas, whose great grandfather had purchased Matangi Island in 1878, and her husband Noel Douglas, a 4th generation of Scottish and Irish descent, began on their journey to develop Matangi into one of Fiji’s premier boutique island resorts.

    Can I fish off the resort's beaches?

    On the resort's behalf, the custodians of the traditional fishing rights for the seas surrounding Matangi Island have imposed protection of all marine life within 300 metres of the island's foreshore. Fishing is not permitted inside this zone.

    Will I need Fiji Dollars?

    Some of our activities and tours, including Lavena Coastal Walk, Tavoro Waterfalls, and Togo Village, require entrance fees paid in Fiji Dollars only. You will also need some Fiji Dollars if you decide to do the Taveuni Island Day Tour and visit the local shops or purchase Fijian handicrafts from the women’s group of Togo Village, who visit us weekly to demonstrate how Fijian handicrafts are made.

    Currency exchange is available in the arrival concourse at Nadi International Airport. Small amounts can also be exchanged at the resort's office.

    All transactions at the resort, including spa treatments, activities (minus the entrance fees mentioned above), and beverage and boutique purchases, are charged back to your room for payment upon your departure. We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express. NB: Merchant fees apply; Visa and Mastercard 3.5%, American Express 3.6%.

    Are there ATM facilities at the resort?

    ATM facilities are not available on Matangi Island.

    Is the resort smoke free?

    All our bures, treehouses and common areas, including the bar and dining room, are smoke-free zones.

    Do I need travel insurance?

    Travel insurance is not a mandatory requirement for entry into Fiji; however, as you will need to make several flight connections, comprehensive travel insurance is recommended to cover additional costs that are likely to arise due to trip interruptions, delayed or lost baggage, delayed arrival at the resort resulting in a loss of prepaid accommodation and meals, or other circumstances.

    Matangi will not be responsible for any charges or inconvenience that may occur due to events beyond its control, including, but not limited to, trip interruption, non-operation of international flights or government quarantine in effect, border closures, cancellation, or issues related to lost, damaged or delayed baggage.

    Due to Fiji's remoteness and poor medical facilities and services available in the country, insurance, including emergency medical evacuation, is recommended. As a precaution, scuba divers should have appropriate cover with either PADI or DAN.

     

    What should I pack for my stay?

    Pack casual, comfortable clothing and footwear, hat, sunscreen, and any medication you may require for your stay. If you visit us during our cooler winter months of July and August, we recommend you bring a couple of pieces of long-sleeved lightweight clothing. If you like the outdoors and want to go on hikes, visit the Tavoro Waterfalls or do the Lavena Coastal Walk, we recommend you bring shoes with good traction as the trails are natural, uneven, and sometimes slippery. A light rain jacket is also recommended. Be sure to check the luggage weight restrictions with Fiji Airways at www.fijiairways.com

    Is there cell phone service on the island?

    Both Digicel and Vodafone networks are available on Matangi; however, as there is a Digicel tower on the island, the Digicel network has better coverage throughout the resort, while Vodafone is patchy and primarily available only on the resort’s beachfront.

    Does the resort cater to special dietary needs?

    We are happy to accommodate special dietary needs. Advance notice is appreciated, as it allows us to prepare before your arrival. If you have a food allergy, please inform us before your arrival. As Matangi is very remote, you will need to bring any medication that you may require with you.

    Is there a mini bar in the rooms?

    All of our accommodations have a mini bar fridge. Soft drinks, bottled FIJI water, beer, wine, and snacks are available at a charge. When you arrive, you'll be asked if you'd like your mini bar stocked during your stay. Coffee, tea, and freshly baked cookies are available at all times in all rooms and will be replenished daily during your stay.

    Is there a gym at the resort?

    Matangi has no gym; however, the 240-acre island is yours to explore and offers excellent walks and hikes. Kayaks and Stand-up paddle boards provide an excellent opportunity for outdoor exercise in our beautiful surroundings.

    What is the resort's policy on tipping?

    Like most resorts in Fiji, we encourage our guests who wish to tip staff for their excellent service to donate to our Staff Gratuity Fund. Distributed quarterly to all staff members, this is the fairest way to ensure that all the 100+ staff members who have worked tirelessly to make your stay memorable receive their fair share of your tip. If you would like to contribute to our Staff Gratuity Fund, you can do so at the office when you leave. We accept cash (Fiji Dollars or foreign currency), Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Contributions are appreciated.

    Are there mosquitoes?

    As we are in the tropics, there are some mosquitoes; however, as there is no stagnant water on Matangi for mosquitoes to breed in large numbers, we have very few. Aerogard mosquito repellant is provided in the bures.

    Do I need to book any activities before my arrival?

    Except for scuba diving and the Horseshoe Bay picnic, which can be booked before your arrival, all other activities and day tours can only be booked at the resort. If you wish to book a picnic in Horseshoe Bay on a particular day to celebrate a special occasion, please email us your date so we can reserve it.

    If you are a certified scuba diver and wish to prepay for scuba diving, please email us at info@matangiisland.com for information and pricing. If you are booking with us directly via our website, 3-day/6-tank and 5-day/10-tank packages can be added as an extra to your reservation.

    Do I need to book spa treatment before my arrival?

    Spa treatments do not need to be booked before arrival. You will receive a complimentary Barefoot Ritual, which we recommend you do within the first two days of your arrival. This will allow you to meet with our spa therapists and discuss what treatments you wish to have during your stay.

    What can I bring the school children?

    All educational materials are greatly appreciated; however, it can be challenging to bring items because of the airlines' weight restrictions. Small, lightweight items, including pens, pencils, and erasers, are always a good option. If you want to donate to the village school fund financially, you can do so at our office. Monetary donations from guests have assisted with purchasing desks, chairs, books, computers, and other educational materials and equipment, including sporting equipment, for the school.

    What is the resort's dress code?

    We recommend comfortable and relaxed clothing. T-shirts, shorts and sarongs are accepted in the dining room. As it is considered good manners in Fiji to leave your shoes outside, footwear in the dining room is optional. If you are visiting a village, please dress appropriately, as showing too much skin is a sign of disrespect.

    What is the resort's power supply?

    Our electricity supply is 240-volt AC 50 Hertz. If your device has a dual voltage of 110-220, it will work with an adapter, which you must bring. Our power sockets are three-pronged, the same as in Australia and New Zealand.

    Is there entertainment?

    Our Matangi Serenaders will entertain you with old South Sea melodies and Fijian favourites during your evening meal, except on Sundays. Traditional Fijian dancing, known as a Meke, is held once a week.

    Does the resort cater to special occasions?

    Please let us know beforehand if you have a special occasion to celebrate during your stay with us so that we can plan a fitting celebration. Bona fide honeymooners receive a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine on arrival, and a breakfast in the bure or treehouse on their first morning with us. If you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, our chefs would be happy to bake you a cake.

    Does the resort offer room service?

    Room service is available during normal meal times. Regular daily menu choices apply.

    Is internet access available in the rooms?

    Complimentary wireless internet connectivity is available only in the Vale-Ni-Kana dining room, including the lounge, bar, and pool areas. If you need wireless internet connectivity in your bure, we recommend purchasing a Digicel prepaid data SIM card from the Digicel store at Nadi International Airport. For the Digicel data SIM card to work, your cell phone must not be SIM-locked and must be able to connect to the Digicel Fiji network.

     

    Is there a gift shop at the resort?

    Our gift shop is located next to the office and is open 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily. It stocks Matangi t-shirts and caps, Fijian handicrafts, toiletries, and a small selection of non-prescription pharmaceutical products.

    Our spa gift shop is open 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. daily and stocks Pure Fiji products, locally handcrafted pearl jewellery, Matangi t-shirts and caps, and a range of products by the Rise Beyond the Reef, which is an organisation that supports women in remote communities to bring their crafts to the market place.

    All prices are in Fiji dollars and include Fiji government tax. All purchases will be added to your Bure Account for settlement at checkout. We accept cash (Fiji Dollars or foreign currency equivalent), Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Merchant fees apply: Visa and Mastercard 3.5%, American Express 3.6%.
