At Matangi Private Island Resort, our commitment to the community extends to the island’s most vulnerable residents—its animals.
Taveuni, the third-largest island in Fiji, faces real challenges when it comes to animal welfare, with limited access to veterinary care and no animal shelters. Sadly, these shortages have led to distressing practices such as drowning or abandoning female puppies and kittens to control animal populations.
We believe every animal deserves compassion and the chance to thrive. That’s why we proudly support Taveuni Animal Lovers (TAL), the island’s only registered animal charity. For the past eight years, TAL has provided free spaying and neutering clinics, essential education, and care throughout 26 local villages. Their efforts have helped prevent more than 200,000 unwanted births and have spared countless animals from neglect.
The dedicated team at TAL relies entirely on donations and the support of volunteer veterinarians to continue their important work. Your contribution directly funds vital veterinary services, supplies, and educational programmes to end the tragic custom of disposing of newborn female animals.
As our guest, you have a wonderful opportunity to make a meaningful difference during your stay. Any donation or sponsorship, large or small, is greatly appreciated and can be made at our reception. Guests from the United States can also benefit from tax-deductible receipts.
Together, we can build a kinder, brighter future for Taveuni’s animals. To find out more or to get involved, please chat with our friendly team at reception.
Thank you for helping us care for the special animals that make Taveuni such a remarkable place.
Once a week, we offer a special village tour to Togo Village on the neighbouring island of Qamea. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of the local community and observe everyday village life firsthand.
Upon arrival, guests take part in a traditional kava ceremony of welcome, known as sevusevu. You are welcome to try the kava, but please be aware that the village water is not treated.
During school terms, our visit includes Vuanicau Primary School in Togo Village. Although the children can be a little shy, they are always curious and delighted to welcome visitors. These schools often lack essential resources, so your contribution provides vital supplies and supports teacher training. By investing in education, you’re helping to boost the growth and learning of the students. Even small donations make a big difference.
If you have school supplies to donate or would like to make a financial contribution, please visit our reception or office. For the wellbeing and respect of the community, we kindly ask that donations are made at reception and not directly at the school. Our front office team will be happy to assist you with your donation or sponsorship.
Thank you for joining us in supporting the children and families of Togo Village and helping enrich their educational opportunities.
