Bush Medicine Talk

Bush medicine is still very much practised in the islands. Our gardens and native bush are full of medicinal plants believed to cure various ailments.

Cooking Demonstration

Once a week, our chefs host an informal cooking demonstration, during which they share tips on making classic local dishes, including Kokoda (coconut ceviche), coconut prawn curry made with freshly squeezed coconut milk, handmade roti flatbread, and condiments made with seasonal fruits and a touch of Fijian style.

Handicraft Show

Village women have learned to be very resourceful, using raw materials readily available on the land to make mats and brooms for their household use and tapa bark cloth for formal ceremonies, including weddings and funerals.

Kava & Talanoa Session

Once a week, our staff hosts an informal kava session with talanoa or storytelling. Kava, also known as Yaqona, is an infusion prepared from the root of Piper methysticum, a member of the pepper family.

Coconut Show

Once a week, our activities staff hosts a fun coconut show. Learn about the many uses the coconut tree offers Fijians. Participate in weaving hats and baskets, husking and scraping coconuts, and preparing fresh coconut milk for cooking.

Sunday Church Service

Methodist Church services are available every Sunday at Soso Settlement on the neighbouring island of Qamea. The Fijian service can take between one and two hours.

School Visit

Once a week, we offer a special village tour to Togo Village on the neighbouring island of Qamea. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the warmth and hospitality of the local community and observe everyday village life firsthand.

Bush Hike - Matangi Ridge Top Trail

Matangi’s volcanic ridgetop offers a more challenging but very scenic hike. The trail is steep, narrow, rocky, and slippery in some parts, so care must be exercised at all times. Allow 3 hours to do the full hike.

Snorkelling

Morning and afternoon snorkelling excursions depart daily at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Our friendly staff at the activities bure will be happy to fit you out with your snorkelling equipment for you to use for the duration of your stay.

Matangi Coastal Trail

A natural trail along Matangi’s coastline provides an easy walk to the island’s easternmost tip, where the sun rises. If you're a morning person and like some exercise before starting your day, this is an excellent walk.

Hand-line Fishing

The waters around Matangi offer a variety of excellent eating reef fish, including Coral trout, Trevally, and Reef snapper.

Matangi Island Tour

Once a week, we provide a guided boat tour around Matangi. This is not only a great way to get orientated with the island’s layout, but it is also the best way to view Matangi’s stunning coastline, surrounding coral reefs, and turquoise waters.

Calypso Sailing Catamaran

We have two sailing catamarans available for your use. Basic sailing skills are essential.

The activities bure has kayaks available for your use. For your safety, we ask that you wear a personal safety device.
